Cub Scouts

Yesterday we had our first "real" meeting with our Webelos. We had met with them one time before, but we mostly just used that to get ready for our duties at the upcoming pack meeting. Last week we had to cancel because Terral had to be in town working on the car.

This time we actually worked on requirements, and it turned out really well! We made a tent out of a tarp that we hung over a rope strung between two trees and in the process taught the boys a couple of knots. Then we went over fire safety rules and built a fire in our new pit. One of the rules is that you should clear a ten foot ring of any dry brush, so we brought out a couple shovels and the boys happily cleared away some of our weeds for us. :) Seriously, they were so enthusiastic about everything. They did get distracted awfully easy though. If one boy saw something, the rest had to run and check it out. I have a potted tomato plant (that we finally got one tomato off of!), and one boy said, "Look, it's a tomato plant!" And all the other boys ran over to see.

The fire pit is near our chicken run, and the boys were very interested in the chickens. One of the boys told me he'd always wanted to gather eggs, but had never had the opportunity. Once we had the fire going, another boy asked if they could cook some eggs over it. We weren't planning on doing that, but we thought, "Why not?" So they all went with me to see if the chickens had laid any more eggs since that morning, and we found one. Then I gathered some cooking supplies and a few more eggs from the fridge and each boy got to cook his own egg (with a lot of help from Terral) over the fire.

Because we hadn't really planned on doing that part, we went a little long with our meeting and one of the dads came to pick up his son before we were done. A ran to tell his dad he'd be just a little longer, and he excitedly said, "Dad, we have eggs from chickens!" Dad thought that was pretty hilarious. :)
